I confess that I’ve never been a huge Star Trek fan. I was too young at the time they showed it from finnish television and it was Channel 4 that broadcasted it. We didn’t have it until late 90’s. Babylon 5 was enough at the time so Trek didn’t just fell inside the radar — or should I say scanners?
I do remember watching some episodes with my father. Either one of us remembers which season or when.
However this post is about the movies so television series aside. Movies worth watching are in bold. Spoilers ahead!
My top eleven Star Trek movies are:
- Star Trek 2009 (11th):
I saw it two times with older movies in between. That gives me enough calibration to call this the greatest Star Trek movie ever made. First, it’s full of one-liners from the past movies. Second, it’s the most distorted time warp they’ve made so far. Third, it’s flawless. - Undiscovered Country (6th):
Originally VI was supposed to tell the story of young Kirk and buddies but cast and crew disagreed. I’m glad they did, because this is by far most inspiring and well flowing Trek they’ve made with original cast. Plot is centered around people, not time-travel or other mystical new technology. - Star Trek the Motion Picture (1st):
There is certain sense of over-stretched pilot for a television series. That aside it gives pretty good first impression on the Trek universum. Minutes long flying around of Enterprise at the beginning is something I actually missed from 2009 Trek. - Wrath of Khan (2nd):
Khan requires no introduction and entitles a status of a cult classic. Kirk suddenly has a son? This rotten addition to plot actually works quite well as an extra spice in the Undiscovered Country. - First Contact (8th):
Borgs are awesome. - The Voyage Home (4th):
Hilarious. I understand funny collisions with present day earth. But whale aliens are too sad to be funny. - Generations (7th):
They just had to get Kirk on screen one last time. - The Search for Spock (3rd):
Nimoy… er Spock didn’t die. His resurrection made US box office number-one and $76,471,046. They say economy in Trek universum is not based on money. - Insurrection (9th):
Apparently even Picard needs a love story. Mr. Data saves this propaganda mash-up from total disaster. - The Final Frontier (5th):
Oh my god. Literally. - Nemesis (10th):
No commets. Don’t watch it.
And then some Google Trivia: Where do you get if you search Star Trek movies with roman numeral?
